€300 FOR A JETSKI RIDE FROM AFRICA TO SPAIN – HOW ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS BUILT A €50 MILLION INDUSTRY IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN

New figures have revealed illegal immigrants crossing the Straits of Gibraltar can buy a ticket on a jetski for as little as €300.

The new data from Europol’s European Migrant Smuggling Centre shows passage on a rubber dinghy can be bought at a bargain price of just €100.

The shock prices highlight just how lucrative smuggling has become in the so-called Western Mediterranean route.

The report indicates the illegal trafficking industry is worth €50 in this region alone – an industry which this year succeeded in bringing 22,258 migrants to Spanish shores.

Across the whole of Europe, the estimate is the clandestine trade is worth a whopping €190 million.
