The Health Ministry says that the growth rate of the coronavirus pandemic is falling in nearly all regions.

María José Sierra said more than 40,000 people have been discharged from hospital, the number of intensive care admissions is following a downward trend, but almost 19,500 health workers have contracted the virus since the beginning of the outbreak, accounting for 14.3% of total infections.

Of these, 10% have been hospitalised and 20% have recovered and have been discharged with the majority of health professionals being monitored at home.

There were 674 Covid-19-related deaths reported on Sunday, and 809 on Saturday. The steady decrease after eight straight days of more than 800 daily fatalities last week suggests that the confinement measures are finally having an effect.

The total number of deaths in Spain since the coronavirus outbreak began is now 13,055, there have been more than 135,000 registered infections, with 60,000 people hospitalised.

Nearly 7,000 people have been admitted to intensive care and 40,000 have recovered from Covid-19 and been discharged from hospital.

While the figures for Sunday and Monday offer hope, they should be treated with caution given that there has been a slight delay in reporting from Spain’s regions over weekends since the crisis took hold and we may see a rise in today’s figures when they are released later.

Arancha González Laya, Spain’s minister for foreign affairs, says that a number of Spanish companies are working on the manufacture of protective masks.

The government has said in recent days that it is likely that we will have to wear masks outside once confinement measures here are relaxed.

For now, however, most of us have been unable to buy such items given the high demand.

According to the minister, “given that we are in lockdown,” priority has being given to health workers in the supply of masks.

Once we begin to leave confinement, masks will be available from the public and private sectors with national production being complemented with imports.
