The Spanish Health Ministry and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez have said that Madrid is a cause for concern, after figures showed that the region has accumulated nearly a third of all of the new coronavirus cases in the last week. With 14% of the population of Spain, Madrid accounts for 14,871 of a nationwide total of 49,399 – over 8,000 of which were reported yesterday from the previous 24 hours. Something similar is taking place in terms of hospitalizations: 30% of Covid-19 patients in the country are in the Madrid region.

Meanwhile the cities of Salamanca and Valladolid are to return to phase 1 of the lockdown, with restrictions on the number of people who can meet at any given time.
Concerns are also rising in the Balearic Islands, with a nursing home on Mallorca reporting 77 cases and 2 deaths.
However, Health Minister Salvador Illa stressed that the recent surge in infections hadn’t led to heightened pressure on hospitals, where occupancy of beds earmarked for COVID-19 patients is at around 6% across the country.
