The European Parliament has removed the immunity of Carles Puigdemont, Clara Ponsatí and Toni Comín. After hearing this news, Puigdemont has declared that “we are in a political persecution”.

The European Parliament has announced that it is withdrawing the immunity of Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín and Clara Ponsatí. The vote was 400 in favour, 248 against and 45 abstentions.

Carles Puigdemont, the former president of the Catalan Government has given a press conference after knowing that he lost immunity, along with Toni Comín and Clara Ponsatí, in which he said that “we are in political persecution”.

He also went against the PP and Ciudadanos and also against Arancha González Laya, Foreign Minister, for welcoming the decision of the European Parliament, he referred to them: “They say it is a judicial procedure, that there is separation of powers, but it is proven that it is conditioned by a political and parliamentary strategy. The European Parliament has been caught up in this strategy”, he said.

He also referred to the fact that this is an internal problem in Spain and that “it is strictly judicial but it is driven by a strong political strategy in which the European High Court has fallen,” said Puigdemont.

“We are at the disposal of the Belgian authorities, we will bring an action before the Court of Justice of the European Union, this is a political persecution”, Carles Puigdemont announced that he would bring an action before the European Court for the decision taken by Parliament.

Carles Puigdemont, the former president of the Catalan Government, said that today “is a sad day for the European Parliament. We have lost our immunity, but the European Parliament has lost much more than that and also European democracy”.
