Migrants head for Spanish soil, numbers soar looking to enter Europe

THE interior ministry reports almost 8,000 migrants have arrived in Spain by boat in the first four months of 2021 – over 58% more than the same period 12 months earlier.

Between New Year’s Day and April 30, as many as 7,737 migrants arrived on
Spanish soil carried on 390 open boats. In 2020, it was 4,894 over the same period, ferried on 251 small craft.

Spain’s Canary Islands, off the west African coast reported 4,411 migrants arrived on 123 small boats; a 134% increase over the same period last year as the route became more popular for those looking for a gateway into Europe.
