Vaccination rollout remains key

CORONAVIRUS deaths in Spain continue to fall with the number of victims at the end of May the lowest since last summer.

Experts say progress in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic is largely due to the speed the vaccination campaign is progressing – 2.3 million people received a shot over the last seven days and 38% of the total population have now had at least one dose.

Across May, 1,731 people lost their lives to the disease – 40% down on the April total of 2,757 and almost a quarter down on the 6,317 who died in March. The health ministry says the curve continues to fall.

And Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), said that the “progress of transmission is stable and it is very likely that it will hold steady in the coming weeks.”

Health experts agree the end of the crisis draws nearer but say there is still a long way to go before normality returns – a plateau in infections already caused by easing of health rules.
