It would be unfair for the winners to say that the 94th edition of the Oscars will go down in history for the slap of the actor Will Smith to the comedian Chris Rock, but we all know that it will. The reaction of the Oscar winner as Best Leading Actor for ‘The Williams Method’ turned the ceremony into a thriller genre that reached climax with Will Smith’s tearful speech as he picked up the Best Leading Actor figurine.
At first, both the reaction of Chris Rock, who knew how to face the blow and continue with his monologue, and the continuation of the gala made those present think that it was scripted. As has been usual in Hollywood the monologue on duty makes a review of the nominees with jokes included. This time the discord joke was related to the haircut of Jada Pinkett Smith, the actor’s wife. The actress also told months ago the nightmare she was living after an autoimmune disease had caused her alopecia disorder. Chris Rock, was comparing Jada to Lieutenant O’Neil. A joke that disgusted Jada by her face and with which Will Smith did smile at first before seconds after getting up from his seat, heading to the stage and slapping Rock. The actor, a master at giving intensity to his actions, finished off the gesture after returning to his place and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth”.
The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles (California) went silent. And what happened after was just a succession of minutes of waiting until the name of Will Smith sounded on stage again, this time as the winner of the Oscar for Best Leading Actor. Smith took advantage of the speech to remind us why he won that statuette: he apologized to the academy and left a phrase for the story in the air: “In the best moment of your life is when the devil knocks on the door”, a few words that had just been dedicated to him by his partner Denzel Washington, also nominated as a leading actor.
