High temperatures also affect our northern neighbours. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have already issued warnings to warn the population. Meanwhile in Spain, France and Portugal this heat wave continues with temperatures above 40 degrees and numerous forest fires.

The UK reinforces ambulance services for these days as part of measures against the heat wave that will devastate the country with temperatures that could exceed 40 degrees. More than a dozen railway companies have asked the British not to travel during the first days of the week, unless strictly necessary, and a total of 21 operators have warned that their services will be affected, as there will be speed restrictions throughout the train network.

In Italy the heat wave will cause temperatures of up to 42 degrees in what is expected to be “the hottest week of 2022”. In addition, the country is experiencing its greatest drought in the last 70 years (200 days without raining) that has caused a landslide in the Italian Alps again. The Po River is at minimum levels and is vital for water consumption, crop irrigation and electricity generation. A total of 170 towns in Piedmont have announced restrictions on water consumption, with fines of up to 500 euros if someone makes use of this resource other than drinking or showering.

Belgium activated from this Monday the orange alert because a heat wave that can also increase the thermometers to 40 degrees today, Tuesday. The Government recommends that the population drink water frequently and take shelter in cool places. The railway service has announced that it will suspend 34 trains at peak times today to avoid possible technical failures due to high temperatures.

Belgium will activate from this Monday the orange alert before a heat wave that can also increase the thermometers to 40 degrees next Tuesday. The Government recommends that the population drink water frequently and take shelter in cool places. The Netherlands has declared the yellow alert for tropical heat on Monday and Tuesday and announces that temperatures could exceed 38 degrees in the south of the country, an unusual time that has led to the implementation of the National Heat Plan. Among the recommendations, which are part of this plan, are to avoid efforts and drink water, keep houses cold and care for animals.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has also taken steps to relieve heat among travellers, as personnel problems that have been registered at the airfield since the end of April are causing queues of more than two hours to cross the security checkpoints, and some of those lines are outside the building. Therefore, ice cream, water, and snacks will be distributed to travelers during the waitings in the coming days, and will try to keep the queues under a roof or in the shade.
