A 20-month-old girl dies due to hail in La Bisbal d’Empordà (Girona)

The strong hailstorm that has fallen in La Bisbal d’Empordà (Girona) has left a mortal victim. A 20-month-old baby has died from injuries caused by hail. The little girl had to be transferred to the Trueta hospital in Girona and died shortly afterwards. In addition, another thirty people have suffered minor injuries.

Several areas of Catalonia are on alert for the intense storm. The icy stones, which have also caused damage to vehicles and roofs, have registered a record size, reaching more than 10 centimeters.

The Generalitat Bombers have received up to 23 warnings from La Bisbal d’Empordà and two more from Forallac (Girona) for the hail storm. The storm, which according to the Generalitat is the strongest of its kind in Catalonia in 20 years, has caused numerous incidents.

In the last hours the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has detailed that “the convective nuclei in the central coast present an intensification in the electrical activity, and high reflectivity. Highlights the storm that affects the Garraf. New storm cores will continue to form in this sector and enter the pre-territorial”.

They also explained that “the presence of clouds during the early morning has prevented the temperature from dropping as much as yesterday”.

In Murcia the storm has brought strong wind and rain. The same situation also occurred in points of the interior of Valencia and winds in Granada. There, violent gusts have razed trees and even a carnival tent.
