Leo Messi Secures Second The Best Award After Stellar Performance in 2022 Qatar World Cup

Last night in Paris, Argentine football star Lionel Messi was crowned with The Best award, for the second time in recognition of his exceptional performance in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The Argentine football community celebrated the occasion, as The Best awards were also presented to Lionel Scaloni for best coach, Dibu Martínez for best goalkeeper, and best hobby.

As is typical with such awards, there was debate around the results, with some arguing that Karim Benzema also deserved the award. One of the most controversial points was the absence of Vinicius among the finalists for the Ideal Eleven of the year, which was composed of Courtois; Hakimi, Van Dijk, Cancelo; Casemiro, Modric, De Bruyne; Messi, Benzema, Haaland, and Mbappé.

The FIFA has revealed the votes for The Best 2022 award, which were cast by the captains and coaches of the 211 member countries of FIFA, along with one specialized journalist from each country. Messi was the majority’s first choice, receiving five points. However, some of the votes were noteworthy.

For instance, Luis de la Fuente, the national coach of Spain, voted for Julián Álvarez in first place, followed by Jude Bellingham and Luka Modric. Sergio Busquets, as captain of Spain, chose Lionel Messi (5 points), Robert Lewandowski (3 points), and Karim Benzema (1 point).

It is also worth noting the vote of Aliou Cissé, the coach of Senegal, who chose Mbappé and Achraf ahead of Mané, his own team captain. Didier Deschamps, the coach of France, chose Kylian Mbappé in first place, followed by Karim Benzema and Lionel Messi. Lionel Scaloni, the coach of Argentina and winner of The Best for best coach, voted for Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez, and Luka Modric.
