After Spain experienced its first official heatwave of the year — with parts of the country hitting 40ºC for the first time in 2025 — one local business owner near Javea is calling for homeowners to prepare their properties for the hot summer ahead.
Meteorologists warn this summer will likely be hotter and drier than previous years, placing added strain on our homes and bodies.
So how can homeowners stay cooler without sacrificing their outdoor lifestyle?
Melanie Kunz, who runs AMASVISTA Glass in Pedreguer with her partner Siegfried, believes the solution is smarter shading and climate-aware design.
The pair specialises in the installation of SUNFLEX glass curtains in Javea and surrounding towns. SUNFLEX are known for German-engineered frameless glazing systems which let homeowners transform outdoor areas into year-round living spaces.
“In winter, glass curtains help you keep using the terrace for longer. But in summer, they’re just as valuable because you can adjust the ventilation, block heat, and even air-condition your outdoor areas if the system is properly sealed,” Melanie told BayRadio.
But not all glass curtain systems are built to withstand the extremes of Spain’s Mediterranean climate.
In this post, Melanie shares with BayRadio why AMASVISTA Glass installs only German-engineered SUNFLEX systems — and the 10 reasons she believes they’re superior when it comes to weather, durability, and all-year comfort.
1. Frameless design with no vertical profiles
SUNFLEX glass curtains offer a completely frameless view, meaning no bulky vertical profiles that block your outlook. This is one of the main selling points of SUNFLEX for properties with balconies or terraces overlooking the sea, countryside or mountains.
This creates a clean, unobstructed connection between indoors and outdoors.
In summer, the frameless design also reduces the amount of heat-trapping materials, helping your space stay naturally cooler.
2. Slide-and-turn panels for total ventilation control
Unlike fixed glass or standard sliding doors, the unique SUNFLEX SF25 slide-and-turn system features panels that slide individually and rotate to open fully or partially, giving you total control over airflow.

3. Barrier-free access with recessed tracks
SUNFLEX offers the option of recessed floor tracks, which sit flush with the terrace floor. This eliminates trip hazards and allows easy movement in and out.
In Spain’s dry climate, dust and debris often build up around thresholds, but SUNFLEX’s design helps keep the opening clear and easy to clean.
4. Toughened safety glass up to 10mm thick
All SUNFLEX systems come with tempered safety glass.
The panels can be either 8mm or 10mm thick, depending on the installation. That makes them more resistant to cracking or breaking from thermal stress, strong winds, or even an unexpected ball from the neighbour’s garden!
5. Triple-bearing stainless steel runners
The runners and carriage system use stainless steel triple bearings, which offer ultra-smooth operation, and no exposure to corrosion.
Unlike cheaper systems with aluminium or coated parts (these very often rust or seize up under Spain’s salty air and humidity) SUNFLEX continues to glide year after year.
6. Screw-fixed glass panels (no glue)
Melanie says that AMASVISTA have often heard from clients who witnessed the glue on their glass curtain installation melt in the high heat.
oSUNFLEX uses a screw-fix system hidden inside the top and bottom rails. That means the panels stay secure and aligned, even in the intense sun of a south-facing terrace.
7. Double-sealed brush gaskets to keep out heat and rain
Each panel features upper and lower brush seals, mounted directly to the panel frames (not the track).
This clever detail creates an effective barrier against hot draughts, insects, and rain.
8. Up to 22mm of height compensation for uneven surfaces
Spanish homes (especially older villas) often have slight height differences in their patios or balconies.
SUNFLEX’s system includes a height compensation profile that allows adjustments up to 22mm, sealing gaps that might otherwise let in water or hot air.
9. Optional locking systems for added summer security
SUNFLEX lets you lock from the inside or outside, using a turn knob or profile cylinder.
That’s peace of mind in the warmer months when you might be away for long weekends or keeping your home ventilated with some panels open.
10. Built-in drainage channels to handle summer storms
The bottom track includes integrated drainage to collect and remove condensation and cleaning water.
In case of heavy rain, it ensures that water flows away without pooling or pressure, avoiding leaks or damage — even if your floor is slightly sloped.
