An alleged gangmaster has been arrested after an illegal worker died of heatstroke at the weekend. The victim is 42-year-old man from Nicaragua, who was working in fields near Lorca in temperatures that reached 44°C. The man was taken to a health centre suffering from ‘serious effects of heat’ at around 15.30.
In July Spain registered its first drop in jobless claims since February as more businesses began to reopen their doors after months of coronavirus lockdown. The Labour Ministry says the number of people in Spain registering as jobless fell by 2.33% in July from a month earlier, or by 89,849 people, marking the biggest July drop since 1997. Former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has retired from football at the age of 39. Casillas made 725 appearances for Real during a 16-year career at the Bernabeu, winning three Champions League titles and five La Liga crowns. He also helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup and two successive European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
The latest official figures released by the Spanish Health Ministry yesterday for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) is now 302,814. This is an overall increase of 5,760 against the figure released the day before, although the figures did on Monday not include data from Madrid, Catalonia or Navarra for ‘technical problems’. The ministry says that 1,178 infections occurred in the previous 24 hours.
Since Friday, 435 migrants from Africa have arrived on the Spanish coast in small boats, with most of them landing on the Canary Islands and in Andalusia. Of the 43, 168 arrived in the Canaries, eight in the Balearics, 128 in Andalusia, and five in the neighboring Murcia. Spain reported 968 new coronavirus infections yesterday, showing a slower pace of contagion than last week when the country reported more than 1,000 new cases for three days in a row.
