Two cities in Northern Spain have moved to what they're calling a “flexible” phase 2 of lockdown, after concerns over local transmission of the coronavirus.

The average number of daily flights across Spain rose to over 2,000 in the first week of July, doubling from the previous week but still only about a third of year-ago levels as the COVID-19 pandemic keeps travel constrained. Early July figures were much higher than the just 300 daily flights in the first week of May, back in July 2019, there were 5,000-6,000 daily flights on average.

The Spanish government’s new early response plan lists the actions considered necessary to prevent a repeat scenario of March, when the country failed to act quickly against the epidemic and soon became one of the world’s worst-hit countries. A growing number of Spanish regions are making the wearing of face masks in public compulsory amid a new rise in confirmed cases. Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Murcia have already and authorities in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias La Rioja and Navarra also plan to impose similar measures.
