Spain is searching for dozens of migrants missing on three boats en route to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Spain's maritime rescue service said a Civil Guard airplane was searching near the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. A court in Brussels has refused an appeal by former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont to have his European Arrest Warrant quashed. In their ruling they said they were unable to cancel the warrant for Mr. Puigdemont and Toni Comín until the European Parliament comes to it’s ruling regarding their political immunity. Both Mr Puigdemont and Mr Comin have been in self-imposed exile since the Catalan region's failed independence bid.

Spanish champions Barcelona have been granted special permission by La Liga to make an emergency signing outside of the transfer window. The decision comes after French forward Ousmane Dembele was ruled out for six months with a serious hamstring injury. Spain's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Iker Casillas has now announced his intention to run for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Casillas has not yet officially retired but said he had informed current side FC Porto of his decision and expressed his "deepest gratitude" to the club. The 38-year-old has not played for Porto since April 2019 after he had a heart attack during training.

New figures show waiting lists at two of the Costa Blanca’s largest hospitals are HALF the regional average. The University Hospital of Torrevieja and Hospital del Vinalopó in Elche have average waiting times for operations of just 39 and 45 days, respectively. This compares to the 86 day average in the Valencian community, according to figures released by the Department of Health.

EU competition regulators have widened their investigation into additional incentives granted by Spanish authorities to Ryanair and other airlines operating at two airports in Catalonia. The European Commission launched an investigation in 2013 into marketing schemes offered to airlines operating at the Girona-Costa Brava and Reus airports, about 120 km from Barcelona.

Jailed Catalan pro-independence leaders Carme Forcadell and Dolors Bassa have been temporarily released from prison. Forcadell, the former parliament speaker, was granted 3 days of leave each week for 9 hours each day in order to take care of her mother, as laid out in the Spanish constitution. Former minister Bassa was also given permission to take care of an elderly relative under the same rules.
