French supermarket retailer Carrefour has agreed to buy 172 stores under the Supersol banner in Spain, in a deal worth 78 million Euros which would strengthen Carrefour’s number two position here. Carrefour said that the stores and supermarkets being acquired were mainly in Andalusia and the Madrid region, and that they had posted net sales of around 450 million euros in 2019.

Spanish fishing boats are landing only a tenth of their normal summer catch of octopus, an unheard of drop. Since the 1st July they have caught 38 tonnes of octopus, compared with a normal average of 378 tonnes over the same period. Fishermen’s associations believe meteorological and environmental factors must be involved and that it can’t all be down to overfishing.

The Spanish government plans to build 32-foot cylindrical walls around its North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla to stop raids by migrants and individual attempts to enter the country. The new border structures should significantly increase the efficiency of the existing fencing around these two Spanish cities on the North African coast, which is only three, somewhere over four meters high and topped by barbed wire.
